Crew ambassador Jamie Cooke has had a busy few months. First, there was the comeback of all comebacks in Buenos Aires last November, where he fought his way back from joint 29th after a disappointing fence to earn top spot on the podium at the Modern Pentathlon Junior World Championships. 'It was a tough day both mentally and physically,' he says, 'but the competition just proved how long a pentathlon day really is and how important it is to fight till the last metre of the run.'
Not one for basking in the glory, he's since completed two of three winter selection competitions in Bath and, following a brief break (and well-earned rest!) to spend Christmas with his family, is busy training for the final selection competition, which takes place later this month.
In February Jamie will head off to Barcelona for two weeks of intensive training, ahead of four gruelling UIPM World Cup Series competitions that will see him battle it out against the best in the world in the US, Brazil, Hungary and Russia throughout March and April. Next on the calendar is the UIPM Senior World Championships in Rome, Italy, at the start of May, which will be his final major competition in the run-up to London 2012.
Our Team GB Boccia hopefuls, Andrew Morgan and Jess Hunter, have also been busy training through the winter months in preparation for the first competition of the year, the Riverland Cup in Holland, which takes place in early March.
Jess ended her season on a high note with bronze in the BC3 category at the GB Boccia Championships in October last year, and has been honing her skills at training camps, with more planned for January and February in preparation for the start of the competitive season.
After team success at last year's Boccia World Cup in Belfast, Andrew is also busy training and is hoping to make the selection for the Riverland Cup alongside Jess. Both will be aiming to impress ahead of the London 2012 team selection in May.
For international eventer Emily, the winter months are usually a little quieter as the eventing season finishes in October and doesn't start again until March. Following a few weeks of rest for her horses, Emily took advantage of the unseasonably mild weather in November and December to compete in some dressage and show jumping competitions with a couple of her younger horses.
Dassett Courage, who finished the season with a good placing in the Intermediate at South of England in September, has continued to prove his consistency with three Affiliated dressage wins in a row and two Affiliated show jumping victories. Emily has also enjoyed a dressage win and second placing with her new four year old, Rinwood Cooley, who will start his eventing career in the Spring.
Over the next couple of months, Emily will focus on making sure her horses are fit and ready for the season ahead. She'll also attend a training camp in Stow on the Wold, funded by the lottery, for some fine-tuning and competition preparation.
All eyes will be on Drivetime this year, in the hope that he'll carry on where he left off last October, having produced an outstanding double clear at the challenging Boekelo international three-day event, joining the elite band of horses in the world who have amassed more than 1,000 eventing points.
