Wear in the World Autumn 2009

We would like to share with you what ‘wear in the world’ means to us…

Each season, our design and photography team decamp to a new destination that is appropriate to the collection, to photograph the new collection, in order to bring you a brochure and website full of new styles, vibrant colour & beautiful scenes. But where do we travel to capture these shots and why do we choose these locations?

Every season we choose a location that is appropriate for the collection, either because that particular part of the world has influenced the collection, or we feel that the location would be somewhere that you, our customers would want to visit. We want to share the beauty and experiences of these places with you. We know you tend to be seasoned travellers, but let us share some insight gained from the locals via our encounters and inspire your next weekend or holiday away.

Deauville
We spent a wonderful week shooting the new autumn collection in a beautiful part of France, coastal Normandy; where misty fields touch small shuttered towns, and endless flat beaches roll out to sea at Deauville….

Deauville, the ‘lady of the French coast’, is one of the country’s most glamorous seaside resorts, symbolising elegance, prestige and sophistication, and is only a 3 hour drive from Calais.

We’d like to share the experiences we enjoyed in this special place and offer a flavour of the places we explored, as well as our tips on the best places to stay, what to eat & the sporting and social highlights in this unique coastal town

Manoir de la Haulle
We were incredibly lucky to stay in this gem of an ancient manor house, not that we had time to relax in the sumptuous rooms or reside in the elegant dining hall and enjoy the splendid grounds. But for a well deserved break in Normandy, Manoir de la Haulle is second to none. Renée and Jerome will make you feel completely at home, with the most wonderful French home cooking and copious amounts of local wine. There are also two self contained gites in the grounds for larger groups or families who crave even more space, but still with the trappings of luxury.

Château les Bruyères
Undoubtedly one of the most enchanting places to stay, Château les Bruyères, in a lovely place called Cambremer, is not far from Deauville. Surrounded by magical rolling fields and orchards, it’s a haven for horseriding, enthusiasts or those who simply want to relax in idyllic surroundings.

Hotel Normandy
For a taste of pure luxury and traditional elegance, Normandy Hotel is the place to go. It has an unmistakable and striking silhouette, with opulent interiors and traditional high class service..

The dramatic sea views are fantastic… and it just happens to lie a strone’s throw from the famous Deauville casino.
If you’re thinking of visiting during the film festival (always 1st/2nd week in September), plan well ahead – as this is the place to stay (more about the iconic film festival later).

Horses – the heart of Deauville
Horses are at the heart of Deauville, from racing to polo, from breeding to horseriding, Deauville is the ‘city of the horse’.

Our favourites are the polo and the racing. The Lucien Barrière Deauville Polo Cup takes place every August (1st – 30th) in Deauville. The Coupe d'Argent, for teams with 12- to 14-goal handicaps, takes place during the first two weeks and the Coupe d'Or, which ranks among the world’s top four tournaments outside Argentina, alongside Palm Beach, Cowdray and Sotogrande, takes place during the last two weeks. The Coupe d'Or is an event that everyone, whether a polo enthusiast or not, will enjoy for the competition and thrilling entertainment.

Sport and spectacle combine at the highest level at Deauville’s race meetings at La Touques and Clairefontaine. The Summer season includes 36 meetings, from July 3rd to 30th August – spectacular racing is guaranteed.

Film Glamour
For true glamour, time your stay for the Deauville American Film Festival – the 35th event this September (4th-13th September) sees directors and legendary actors descend on Deauville once again. The festival is one of Europe’s most respected. Soak up the ambience, the red carpet glamour, glitz and partying. Hollywood A-listers from over the years have had their names emblazoned on the beach huts which line the broad sands beyond the boardwalk. Enjoy wandering up the beautiful Boardwalk, built in 1933, and spot American film stars names, from Clint Eastwood to Gene Kelly, Harrison Ford to Lauren Bacall all along the beach huts.

If you take just one of our personal nuggets from our stay in Deauville, let it be this; seek out the famous Brasserie Les Vapeurs. A truly warm atmosphere is guaranteed and the best in French cuisine is served – our favourite.. the Scallops..

www.thetraveleditor.com/article/2307/Feature_Article_Leisure_Deauville_
and_Trouville_Unidentical_twins.html?page=1

It’s just a 15 minute stroll across the bridge in Trouville, the pretty neighbour to Deauville, which is also well worth a visit.

“Whether you eat moules a la crème and other fabulously fresh seafood fished out of the Normandy harbours, or a simple steak frites, dinner at les Vapeurs inevitably turns into a crazy night out.

It could well be the huge bottles of Calvados the waiters wheel out to dispense complimentary thank-you tots to diners as they near the end of their meal. Or just the waiters, who are an exceptionally friendly, helpful and sunny lot.”
