THE HOTEL: DOG & FOX
The Dog & Fox might be the oldest pub in Wimbledon but it’s had a stunning upgrade. It boasts 17 boutique hotel rooms, each exquisitely designed. Stay in the Fox Suite with its roll top bath, or the Hound Suite with a reading nook in a turret. Bordering one of the finest high streets in London, it’s just a half mile walk to the tennis so you won’t miss a set. It also serves a cracking Sunday roast (the Yorkshire puddings come as big as your face) so come hungry.
Wimbledon has a strict code of conduct on the court but off court the style rules are much more relaxed, even in the debenture seats. For her, you can’t go wrong with a jersey tea dress. Cool but crisp with a blazer thrown over the top. Pair with box fresh trainers – they’ll be forgiving on your feet as you wander from court to court. For him, pick laid back chinos in a neat slim fit, a shirt and a lightweight blazer. After all, a little relaxed tailoring never goes amiss.
THE BRUNCH SPOT: THE IVY CAFE
Set yourself up for the day with brunch at The Ivy Café. Just a short stroll from the Dog & Fox, you can choose from the stylish art deco style restaurant or the leafy garden terrace. Why not start the day right with gluten free organic granola? The answer to that might be because there’s Eggs Benedict on the menu. There’s a very good reason it’s a brunch favourite. Or better still, persuade yourself that that The Centre Court Melting Ball – a glorious white chocolate bomb served with fresh strawberries and shortbread – is an essential part of your five a day.
THE CELEBS TO LOOK OUT FOR:
Wimbledon attracts celebrities like bees to honey. The Royals always drop in for a match or two so keep your eyes peeled for Kate and William. And unless they’re filming in Outer Mongolia, the odds are good for spotting Bradley Cooper and Benedict Cumberbatch. You don’t score highly for seeing a Beckham but if you see more than three that’s a good day’s work. Then, of course, you can pick up quick points spotting Hugh Grant, Beyoncé, Jay Z and anyone who has been in Game of Thrones. Sadly, there are no points for spotting Cliff Richard. Too easy.
THE BEST DRINKS IN TOWN: HEMINGWAYS
Watching other people play championship level tennis is thirsty work and one of the great joys of Wimbledon is the fact that it’s always Pimms o’clock. Hemingways has been awarded ‘Best Cocktail Bar in South-West London’ so whatever you fancy, they’re bound to have a shaker for it. Why not order a platter of food and stay for another. After all, it’s not you that has to be back on court at noon tomorrow.
