WHAT TO DO
TAKE A PUNT
Mill Lane Punting Station, Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RS
A gentle punt on the river Cam is arguably the best way to see Cambridge. Pop down to Scudamore’s, who have been running tours since 1910. They certainly know their stuff, and can offer you a chauffeured experience around the waterways. If you’re feeling adventurous (and strong), get away from it all and take out your own punt for the day.
WHERE TO STAY
27-29 Station Rd, Cambridge, CB1 2FB
Playing on Cambridge’s rich academic history, the Tamburlaine allows you to re-live your university days (in far greater comfort). Chose from the fresher, scholar or dean suites. If a night as a fresher fills you with dread, think mahogany, velvet and vintage leather. The hotel exudes a vibrant mix of old-world charm and contemporary decadence. A worthy retreat after a long days punting.
WHERE TO EAT
OLD BICYCLE SHOP
104 Regent St, Cambridge, CB2 1DP
Set on the site of one of oldest bicycle shops in England - rumour has it that they sold a cycle to Charles Darwin himself. Today, they are less in the business of bikes and more in the business of great food. With a cosy interior that pays homage to its history, the menu boasts an array of fresh, locally sourced dishes. They know all about tipples too.
WHERE TO DRINK
12 Regent St, Cambridge, CB2 1DB
A venue of many talents, Novi serves coffee and brunch by day and cocktails by night. Specialising in botanical ingredients, their concoctions encourage you to ‘sloe down’ and ‘don’t dis-pear’. (Guess the fruit; one of your five a day surely?) Survey the city from the leafy roof terrace, cocktail in hand. Life could be worse.
WHAT NOT TO MISS
KINGS COLLEGE CHAPEL
King's Parade, Cambridge, CB2 1ST
The chapel is an architectural masterpiece and a must for anyone visiting the city. Steeped in history, it’s part of the university and took over a century to build. Cast your eyes skywards to see the largest fan vaulted ceiling in the world and don’t miss the impressive selection of medieval stained glass. Famed worldwide for its choir, it’s worth popping into an evensong service to see the musical masterpiece in action.
