Everything you need to know about polo shirts

We have René Lacoste, the 7-time Grand Slam tennis champion, to thank for the humble polo shirt. He first wore one on the tennis court in 1926 and they have evolved to become a staple of both men’s and women’s casual wardrobes. Now available with both long and short sleeves, polo shirts are versatile enough to be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.

Fabric
As regular customers know, at Crew Clothing we never compromise on quality. Therefore every polo shirt you’ll find at Crew is 100% cotton for the softest, most comfortable and breathable result. You’ll see we use two different ways to describe the fabric in our cotton polos:

Pique cotton is cotton that has been weaved in a particular way to produce a subtle ribbed effect with raised parallel cords. This creates a luxuriously soft polo shirt that is also highly absorbent, hence why polo shirts are traditionally worn for sports including golf and polo.

Sueded cotton means the polo fabric is slightly distressed to give it a more ‘worn-in’ vintage wash feel that is even softer against the skin. Polo shirts with a sueded cotton finish have a casual look and are ideal for relaxing in at the weekend.

The Crew edge
Crew Clothing men’s and women's polo shirts feature elegant detailing to give them a distinct edge. These details include rib cuffs and collars, internal fabric trims, relaxed cotton canvas collars and classic cuts. In our men's polo shirts you’ll find distinctive Crew chest badges, number patches and ‘cut and sew’ contrast panels. Our women’s polo shirts feature fabric trims and branded buttons.

A polo shirt is an exceedingly versatile knitted top that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. In fact, we’d go as far to say you can never have too many in your wardrobe. Here are a few tips on how to wear a short or long sleeve polo shirt for men and women.

How to dress up a polo shirt
Lunches with the in-laws, a night on the town or a round of golf are all occasions when polo shirts can be acceptable, as long as you dress them up appropriately. Darker colours are usually smarter so team a dark red, moss green or navy blue polo shirt with a pair of smart dark wash jeans, cotton chinos or – in the winter – a pair of corduroy trousers. If in doubt, opt for a black polo shirt which can be teamed with a smart tailored blazer and jeans for a simple but elegant look.

As well as jeans and cotton trousers, women can team their polo shirt with wide-legged trousers for an elegant nautical feel that’s perfectly on-trend.

How to dress down a polo shirt
Welcome to the striped polo shirt! Ideal for holidays, sports or just relaxing in at the weekend, a short sleeve or long sleeve striped polo shirt is for those who like to inject a bit of fun into their casual wear. Team with a pair of denim jeans and a cashmere sweater when there’s a nip in the air.

For a modern look, wear a long sleeve polo shirt and roll the sleeves up to the elbow. Alternatively you could layer a couple of polo shirts over each other.

In addition to the above women's polo shirts can be worn with a skirt and pumps. Add a casual cotton jacket in cooler weather.
